The two important terms you need to know are Muscle Fiber Hypertrophy and

Muscle Fiber Hyperplasia

  • Muscle Fiber Hypertrophy

Muscle fiber hypertrophy refers to the increase in the diameter of the individual muscle cells. So the larger the cells, the larger the overall muscle.

  • Muscle Fiber Hyperplasia

Muscle fiber hyperplasia, refers to the splitting of muscle fibers in the interest of creating new fibers.

The only thing you have to know is about is Muscle Fiber Hypertrophy because you can’t promote Hyperplasia. According to scientific research, once we are born, the muscle fiber number remains fixed for our lifetime. This means intense weight training cannot promote Hyperplasia.

So all you need to care is about hypertrophy.

There are two types of Hypertrophy. Let’s address the two main forms that muscle fiber hypertrophy can take.

Muscle fiber hypertrophy can be accomplished by either increasing the volume contained within the muscle cell or by increasing the actual amount of muscle contractile protein making up the muscle cells.

To make it simple let’s assume the muscle cell is a water-filled balloon. To make the balloon bigger one can add more fluid to the balloon so that it will stretch to its maximum capacity (increase cell volume) or could add more rubber to the balloon to make it bigger (increasing the actual amount of muscle contractile protein)

So when talking about Hypertrophy we are talking about the second one, i.e. increasing the amount of muscle contractile protein). These make the muscles permanently bigger if you are training continuously and are most aesthetically pleasing and contribute to your overall strength.

So when you are training with weights, your muscle fibers receive microscopic tears. It can also be called muscle damage and these tears continue to increase as you work out at a higher level or receive further tears in the muscular area through more intense activities.

As muscles break down, their sources of energy break down with them. By eating foods high in carbohydrates and receiving natural and synthetic creatine, the body begins to produce new amino acids, which in turn triggers protein synthesis. In order to ensure the same microscopic tears do not occur, the body develops stronger muscle fibers which in turn make your muscles larger.

So when you continue lifting heavier new stress is placed on already larger muscles, which creates new microscopic tears which will, in turn, lead to larger muscles once your muscles repair the fibers with stronger fibers.
